The Impact of a Vision Board (DIY)
Think vision boards are a bunch of b*llshit? Joke’s on you.
Growing up, before the days of Pinterest of course, I had so many dreams. Big dreams. From my seemingly budgetless wedding to inspirational quotes and motivational pieces; they all brought me some sort of relief after a long day of irrelevant calculus homework. Nevertheless, everyone has a dream(s); what better way to achieve them then by looking at them everyday?
While Pinterest is a great tool and inspired me to create a vision board in the first place, I prefer a more hands-on approach. Being a fairly organized person, creating a vision board encouraged me to put all of my dreams and inspiration in one place. Everyday, I add something new. Whether it be a bible verse, a soul-wrenching song lyric, or some gorgeous makeup swatches, there is constantly something new that sparks my interest. Creating a vision board doesn’t just organize your thoughts, but creates new ones and allows your creative juices to flow. I have found that just in these few short weeks since organizing my first vision board, I have felt incredibly motivated. Not only to reach higher, but to not settle into a rut. I often find myself with a bit of writer’s block, especially as of recently. For weeks I couldn’t pinpoint the exact cause. Sometimes I just think I’m a shitty writer which, let’s be real doesn’t quite encourage the creative gears in my mind to crank out new material.
Start with one magazine, something that you’re passion about. Music magazines, home decor, and beauty magazines are a great start.
Tip: I find a lot of my vision board material in ads!
I find it most useful to start with a physical piece of writing/images rather than the internet. There’s something so pure about picking up a printed magazine and searching for inspiration by reading in between the lines, and the perfume ads. With this vision board specifically, I focused more on printed material and tried my best to stray from Pinterest and online forums. As I begin to expand my vision board collection, I will introduce Pinterest pinning; except on a corkboard this time.
Focus on how you want to feel, not just what you want. The more you focus on how you want to feel, the more that your board will come to life and truly start to inspire you.
